Floyd Mayweather, Jr. brilliantly showcased his skills in shutting out Juan Manuel Marquez for his return last Saturday. Mayweather did what he was supposed to do against Marquez, a smaller guy coming up two weight classes to face him, except knock him out. But he dominated in every way possible; he landed clean punches all night long, he was effective, he easily assumed ring generalship, and he couldn’t get hit. As a result, he scored an extremely wide unanimous decision victory. My score read 120-107, as wide as UDs go, with a knockdown in round 2 that slashed off another point from Marquez. Marquez, the tenacious warrior, was made to look like an old, slow, but brave journeyman. None of his textbook punches found any success in breaking down Mayweather’s still-spectacular defense.
