Who is Susan Boyle?
By William Roby If you’ve turned on the TV in the last week, you’ve likely seen her — a plain looking older Scottish woman with a microphone in her hands and a crowd of people on their feet. She’s Susan Boyle, a singing sensation from the small village of Blackburn, Scotland, and she’s burst onto the scene after an audition on the British TV program “Britain’s Got Talent”. Her story is as riveting as her performance was on both the British television show and her recent appearance on CBS’ Early Show. Deprived of oxygen at birth, Ms. Boyle endured a childhood of teasing — she had learning disabilities and an admittedly “unglamourous” appearance.

Susan Boyle is a contestant who entered the competition, and gave this description of her life: she has never been kissed and lives with only her cat Pebbles. You can only imagine what the judges were expecting when she opened her mouth to croak out an entry. Most likely a laugher, one of the entry’s who the producers put into the show so that viewers can laugh at. However, when Susan Boyle began to sing (Les Miserables “I Dreamed a Dream”), the judge’s mouths literally fell open. She was incredible. In speaking to Britain’s newspaper The Mirror about her first TV experience, Boyle mentioned “I looked like a garage. It was mortifying to see and a bit of a shock. I didn’t realize I could reduce people to tears and I hope it wasn’t because of that.” And when she walked into her Church this past Sunday for Easter services, she received a standing ovation. Talk
