Who is Smokey the Bear?
Meet Legends of America, and Pop Culture Icon, Smokey Bear also known as Smokey the Bear. He was, and is, an Icon that taught fire safety, and got generations of people to realize that we could do something to prevent forest fires (Wildfires). His signature line “Only YOU can prevent Forest Fires” was one of the longest Public Service Announcements in History. Following the discovery of the living symbol of Smokey Bear, the character became a big part of American pop culture in the 1950s. He was on radio shows and appeared in comic strips and cartoons. In 1950, six years after Smokey Bear became the Poster Mascot for fire safety, a little 5 pound black cub was found in Capitan, New Mexico, his paws badly burned in a forest fire. The Ranger that found him took him home to nurse his burns. This cub became the living symbol of the Poster Mascot and was named Smokey. Smok
