Sammy Sosa is a professional baseball player. He was born in Consulo, Dominican Republic. He was the fifth of seven children. His baseball career started very slow. His father died when he was very young, so his family did not have much money to buy food and other necessities. Sammy received his first real baseball bat when he was 14. He was signed on to the Texas Rangers at age 16, but sent to the minor leagues to develop his skills. He eventually was traded to the Chicago White Sox and during his first full years with the White Sox in 1993, he had 33 homeruns, 93 RBIs, and was on his way to becoming an all star player. In 1997, he broke a homerun record by hitting 62 homeruns in a year. The previous record was held by Roger Maris in 1961. By 1998, he had hit 66 homeruns in a single season, which was the most homeruns by any hispanic player. In 2003, he hit his 500th homerun, which is another homeroom record. He is a true homerun hero.
