Weather conditions during the winter often play havoc with campus activities by dumping snow or freezing rain on the campus streets, sidewalks and steps. During a heavy snow or freezing rain, Facilities Management works under a “Snow Emergency Plan.” If it has snowed during the night or early morning, we work to ensure that campus roads are open for vehicular traffic at 8:00 a.m. The amount of snow, the temperature, and the condition of equipment are all factors in how quickly we are able to remove snow and ice for safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic. If you have a quesiton or problem with snow removal, call Work Contol at 301-405-2222.

The City of Alexandria works in a unified, coordinated manner to clear snow from city streets and publicly owned property. Three departments have snow removal responsibilities for the City of Alexandria: General Services; Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities; and Transportation & Environmental Services. Transportation & Environmental Services is responsible for snow and ice removal on most public streets and bridges. Typically, alleys and parking lots are not part of our snow removal operations.
