Who is responsible for lost, missing or destroyed government property and how is the government compensated?
The report of survey will be used to determine who is responsible for the loss and also who is responsible for compensating the government for the loss. If an individual is determined to be responsible a statement of charges will be issued to the responsible individual for payment. If the institution is determined to be responsible the institution may do a number of things to compensate the government. The institution may pay by check to the U.S. Treasury, enact their bond or insurance or in some instances purchase a like item for replacement. If either the individual or the institution fails to compensate the government for the loss the program and or individual may be initially placed on probation. If restitution is not made within a specified period of time additional actions may be taken to include decertification and or disestablishment of the unit.
