Who is Ravi Shankar?
Ravi Shankar, who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year, has been called the godfather of world music. He has been playing the Indian sitar for more than 60 years. He achieved international fame in his mid-40s following his association with the Beatles. Ravi Shankar will probably always be viewed as the man who’s done more than anyone else to build cultural bridges between the east and the west, through his playing of an instrument which has come to be identified as the sound of India.
