Who is qualified to practice osteopathy?
In Canada there are two groups of professionals who practice osteopathic techniques. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners have extensive training in traditional manual osteopathic practice but are not medical doctors. They treat patients using manual techniques applied using an osteopathy philosophy. In Canada they can be recognized by the professional designation DO(MP) or DOMTP or M.OMSc (Master in Osteopathic Manipulative Sciences)- signifying the practitioner holds a Diploma that specializes in osteopathic manual practice. Osteopathic Physicians are American trained medical doctors that are recognized by the college of physicians and surgeons (this training is not available in Canada). They are licensed physicians who use an osteopathic philosophy and who may have some osteopathic manual training.
