Who Is Poisoned By Depleted Uranium?
During our weekly peace vigil in front of the Bloomfield library earlier this year, a young man walked by and asked why I was there. I pointed to my sign, “WHO IS POISONED BY DEPLETED URANIUM?” and said that was my motivation. Governments rise and fall, civilizations cease and soldiers have always died, but we now have the capacity to destroy the planet. I told him that I feel I am one of the first products of a new problem. In 1945, my father helped to develop Agent Orange at Diamond Alkali Chemical Company on the Newark-Belleville border. Within ten years, all others in his division were dead of cancer. He fought a succession of cancers the rest of his life. As a child born to him after 1945, I have also developed cancer. In Vietnam, instead of simply spraying salt to prevent forestation and crop growth, the U.S. sprayed Agent Orange which then permanently prevented any further growth and poisoned all in contact – including our soldiers and all their future progeny!
