Isaac Hayes of course was Chef, but he quit the show after they mocked Scientology, his religion. Apparently he had no problem when they mocked everyone elses faith, but as soon as they hit his he quit. It the Chef farewell episode they cut and pasted all of Chef’s words from old recordings of Hayes, that is why the voice was so jerky.
