Who is Peter Carey?
Peter Carey is an austrailian author who is, in my opinion (and those of many others more qualified than I) one of the three or four greatest living authors. His booker prize winning ‘Oscar and Lucinda’ was made into a mediocre movie starring Ralph Fiennes, but the book is so horrible (read: brilliant) that when I finished it I wanted to vomit, cry, scream, shout, break stuff and kill at random. Now, four years later, I am finally able to see it for the ultimate genius it is. And appreciate just how funny it is as well. I cannot in good conscience recommend it. Read it. READ IT. He also won the booker prize for ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ two years ago. Other books include ‘Bliss’ (also a movie although not the first one on the IMDB search), ‘the Tax Inspector’ and several others. Bliss is the most approachable from a storytelling point of view, especially if you’re not in the mood to torture yourself.
