All sexually active women are at risk. Cervical Cancer is much more common than people realize and kills hundreds of Canadian women every year. It is also one of the most preventable cancers through early detection (The Pap). Other groups are also at increased risk, mostly because they are not aware that they need to be screened or do not know where they can go to get a pap: • Women over 60 years of age often forget to get a pap for years because they may not be currently sexually active. They can forget that cancer grows over a period of time, and they need to continue getting paps! • Women who have recently immigrated to Canada. They are often unaware of the importance of this procedure, and for cultural or language reasons are not connected to routine health care.
