Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was the last head of state of the USSR and served from 1988 till its collapse in 1991. He made attempts to reform the Soviet Union and attended summit conferences with the United States to hold talks with president Regan. He contributed to the ending of the cold war and was awarded the Nobel peace prize.
