Who is Matilda and why is she dancing?
Waltzing Matilda is a popular Australian folk song about a wandering man who, while camping by a watering hole, captures a sheep that happens to belong to a landowner. The landowner confronts him with the police along, but the wanderer refuses to be caught and instead drowns himself in said watering hole. Hey, we didn’t say it was an uplifting tune, but it certainly is catchy. The words were written by Banjo Paterson, a famous Australian poet, in 1895, and it remains well known today.
