Her full name is Mary Elizabeth Smith and she is an American gossip columnist. She is known popularly as "The Great Dame of Dish."

Smith started with a self-titled gossip column for the New York Daily News. Later she started appearing daily on the Daily News‘ TV program "Live at Five" and stayed with the show for eleven years. Her TV time made her a popular figure in the Manhattan social scene and helped launch the success of her column which was syndicated to nearly seventy newspapers.
In 1991, Smith moved to Newsday and stayed there until 1995. After, she moved again to the New York Post. In February of 2009, the Post announced that it would be no longer able to run Smith’s column due to cost-cutting measures. 
Liz Smith is also one of the founding members of wowOwow.com, a website for women to discuss culture, politics and gossip.
