Who is known as the father of civil engineering?
Thomas Telford (1757-1834), the first President of the Institute of Civil Engineers, is the father figure of the British civil engineering profession. Telford established the professional ethos and tradition of the civil engineer — a tradition followed by all engineers today. He built bridges, roads, harbors, and canals. His greatest works include the Menai Strait Suspension Bridge and Pont y Cysyllte Aqueduct, the Gotha Canal in Sweden, the Caledonian Canal, and many Scottish roads. He was the first and greatest master of the iron bridge.
