Who is King Sejong the Great, the inventor of Hangeul?
Sejong, born on May 15, 1397, was the third son of King Taejong (3rd monarch of Joseon) and Queen Min. Enthroned the fourth king of Joseon, Sejong is known to have had a great passion for intellectual pursuits, love for his people and a deep interest in improving the lives of the peasantry. He is said to have always put his people first during his reign. Hangeul was not the only invention under his rule (1418-1450). He achieved improvements in agriculture, science and technology to improve the lives of his people. The reign of King Sejong is thus known to have been one of the most peaceful times of Joseon, when politics, the economy, society and culture were known to have witnessed great developments. He was a virtuous king with a warm heart for his people. He was later named King Sejong “the Great” by subsequent generations. His head appears on the Korean 10,000won note.
