Uganda: FDC Trees Uprooted Bonney Odongo and Patrick Okino28 May 2009 Kampala — Residents of Amach sub-county in Lira district have destroyed tree seedlings planted by the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, during his recent tour of Lango. Besigye had gone to campaign for FDC candidates in the just concluded local council byelections. The district party secretary, Patrick Olobo, said he suspected the over 104 seedlings were destroyed by NRM supporters. He described the incident as “an insult on the environment.” Some area residents, however, said the seedlings could have been uprooted by people who were angered by Besigye’s criticism of the Uganda Peoples Congress for pulling out of the inter-party cooperation. Besigye said during the tour that UPC was weak, had support only in Lango and could not perform well beyond Karuma Falls.
