Who is in charge of my relative’s care in the nursing home?
Each resident of a nursing home is under the care of a physician to evaluate his needs and prescribe medical care. A nursing home may not perform medical treatment or prescribe medication, a special diet or restraints without a physician’s consent. Ask your elder’s doctor if she will visit the nursing home to continue to provide care. Many physicians will, particularly if the facility is close and the physician has several patients residing there. If not, you or your elder must choose a new doctor.
