WHO IS HELEN?
HELEN magazine is named in honor of a woman who stood up for what she believed, gave unselfishly to others and made a difference in her community. At the age of 16, Helen Gougar (1843-1907) arrived in Lafayette to teach school. She went on to become a national advocate for womans suffrage, the first woman sworn in as a member of the Tippecanoe County Bar, a Temperance leader, editor of her own newspaper and author of countless columns for other papers, and protector of the rights of children and women around the world. Helen Gougar was a witty, intelligent, intense and compassionate woman. She was a world traveler, a businesswoman, a philanthropist and a genuine leader. Helen made a difference in the world around her – just like the women of our community today.
