Who is enforcing civil rights in Mississippi: Is there a need for state human relations legislation?
Mississippi State Senator Alice Harden and a host of experts will address this and other civil rights issues facing states throughout the South at the monthly meeting of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, October 11 in Jackson, Mississippi. Commissioners will hear presentations from State Advisory Committee (SAC) chairpersons from Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Nebraska and Oklahoma State Advisory Committee chairpersons will also be on hand to offer emerging civil rights developments and concerns from these states. The October 11 meeting is being held in conjunction with a two-day forum scheduled by the Mississippi SAC on Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10, at the state Capitol. State and local public officials and community leaders will offer the Commission their perspectives on the status of civil rights in Mississippi during the forum.
