Who is Desmond Tutu?
As one of the most remarkable figures in twentieth century public life, Desmond Tutu has been a source of inspiration for millions of people all over the world. Here is a brief overview of the life of Desmond Mpilo Tutu, including some of the contributions he has made to human rights, religion, and politics during his lifetime. Desmond Tutu was born on 7 October 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal and grew up within the embrace of the Anglican Communion. Around the age of twelve, Tutu’s family settled in Johannesburg. Early on, Desmond Tutu had the dream of becoming a physician, so he could heal people of their infirmities. Unfortunately, the Tutu family was not in a position to afford the training necessary, so Tutu chose to enter the teaching profession. It was in 1957 that Desmond Tutu made his first public stance for equality, when he opposed the recent passed Bantu Education Act, which setup circumstances that he saw as only making a quality education even harder for many South Africans
