Who is Deming?
A. Dr. Deming is considered the father of TQM. There are others who also joined the TQM effort, each with slightly different variation. These others believe that TQM can be implemented in part of an organization, such as one production plant or one department. Deming is alone in insisting that it requires an organization-wide effort. You can learn other aspects of his philosophy by reading “The curmudgeon who talks tough on quality,” Fortune, June 25, 1984 which is available on UIS’s Infotrac database. (Go to http://www.searchbank.com/searchbank/uiuc_uis, select Infotrac Web, then enter your SSN, and then type the title of the article and click “Search.”) The Fortune article mentions Demings 14 points. What are they? A. Over the years Dr. Deming developed a short list of items that captured the essence of his beliefs. That list is available in the second part of this session’s lecture. You may go to it now or read it later. Doc, I’m having a hard time envisioning how this would work in
