The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people. Often referred to simply as “His Holiness” (HH), or “His Holiness The Dalai Lama”, Tibetans usually call the Dalai Lama by the epithets Gyalwa Rinpoche, meaning “Precious Victor”, or Yeshe Norbu, meaning “Wish-fulfilling Jewel.” “Lama” (meaning “teacher”) is a title given to many different ranks of Tibetan Buddhist clergy. The Dalai Lama is believed to be the current incarnation of a long line of Tulkus, or Buddhist Masters, who have become exempt from the wheel of death and rebirth. There is dilemma regarding whether Dalai Lama is a person (his name) or a position a particualar society (nation or country) has bestowed on a person. The latter defintion is correct. He is the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan nation. They call him so like we call ‘Prime minister’. He is chosen by a procedure wherein as soon as the current Dalai lama attains Nirvana (dies) all other lamas go search for his successor who reveals certain traits brought about by transmigration of the earlier soul into this later boy, bringing in the wake all the accumulated wisdom of past Dalai lamas. In the interregnum the lamas run an interim arrangemnt till the new Dalai lama is ordained. As a sentiment I find it very great whatever be the truth. It deserves to be respected. But this being a historical beleif with no basis, the modernists want to do away with it and modernise Tibet; like the boy-scout helping an old woman to cross the street, when she didn’t want to. He has been reborn so many times that he has accumulated much wisdom.He is almost (but not quite) what the Pope is to the Catholic Church, He does not write books of prophecy or float in the air, He is still just “a Buddhist monK”. Read some of his extraordinary works and tell me they don’t impress you, They come from a very old mind, I went to see him last month and it was incredible!
