Who is Charles Rennie Mackintosh?
…and what’s he doing on this web site? Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) is a renowned Scottish architect and designer whose name is now synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement in architecture. We raise his eminence here because we are inspired by his creativity and prolific achievements. The “stained glass” motif used in the Conkie-Law.ca menu bar was inspired by a Mackintosh window design. He loved to contrast the rigidity of squares and oblongs with the gentle curves and colours of nature. His work is easily recognisable, with frequent use of motifs such as the stylised rose, seen in so many of his projects – a trademark of simplification, abstraction and symbolism. He used mediums such as glass, lead, metals, wood, ceramics and textiles in his designs for such diverse items as furniture, doors, windows and cutlery. His architecture can still be seen throughout Scotland, particularly in and around Glasgow. If you find yourself in Scotland, be sure to visit the Glasgow School
