Barnes is the president, chairman and CEO of Sara Lee. Her former power position was as the first female CEO at PepsiCo. She rose to CEO of PepsiCo in 1996, however left this post in 1997 to spend more time with her family. After PepsiCo, she served as interim president and COO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, as well as teaching as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and Northern Central College.

She moved to Sara Lee in July 2004 as the president and COO. Later she rose to chairman and CEO. She also moved the company headquarters out of downtown Chicago to suburban Downers Grove.
