Jöns Jakob Berzelius was born in 1779 and died in 1848. He was a Swedish chemist, pharmacist and physician and is considered to be one of the founding fathers of chemistry as a modern science. He coined many of the terms that are still in use in chemistry today, such as catalysis and protein, and he invented the system of chemical notation where the composition chemical compounds are expressed using abbreviations of the Latin names of the elements (eg O for oxygen and Fe for iron) and numbers telling the number of atoms of each element. He also discovered several new elements. He was one of the first people to give a detailed account of the relative (relative to oxygen) atomic weights of all known elements (at that time).
