Who is at risk from asbestos exposure?
Since the 19th century, asbestos was used extensively in the United States in construction, shipbuilding, steel making, chemical plants, power plants and oil refineries. Flooring, walls, and ceilings have also been made of asbestos. Direct and bystander exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma and other cancers. Asbestos can also be carried home on the clothing of exposed workers.
