Who is at risk for postpartum depression?
While there are a number of risk factors for postpartum depression, one of the greatest risk factors is depression during pregnancy. This is a time to seek help and to address the many changes that you are experiencing so that you can get the treatment you need and possibly prevent a full-blown postpartum episode. Other risk factors include: history of a mood disorder, previous postpartum depression, history of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, mood swings when taking oral contraceptives, family history of mental illness, marital conflict, newborn health, and birth experience.
