Who is Anubis?
Anubis is the ancient Egyptian god of embalming and mummification and the patron god of embalmers. He is credited with being the first to practice mummification and plays an important part in the rituals associated with embalming. He is also seen as the guardian of the dead and a guide through the underworld. Anubis is usually depicted as a black jackal or as a man with the head of a jackal. Jackals were frequently sighted in Egyptian cemeteries and this may have led to their association with Anubis. Both hands of this statuette probably once held a sceptre or staff.
