In ancient times disciples used to stay with the Guru for a longer period of time. This was required for two things: 1. Guru could understand and guide the student better 2. He could consider the students on the basis of Uttama, Madhyama and Adhama (Best, Mediocre, Average or Worse). In the first case Guru used to guide the disciple at every step of life and also provide them with adequate knowledge of dealing with various situations in life. As per the second criteria, Guru used to decide the path to be provided to the disciples. The path can vary from physical Yoga, Mouna Yoga, Dhyana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Laya Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga etc. as per the ability, quality and temperament of the disciple. In case the disciple is provided with the knowledge of Hatha Yoga, Mouna Yoga, Dhyna yoga, Bhakti yoga, Karma yoga the disciple does not require to stay with the Guru for long, while in cases of Kundalini Yoga it is essential that the disciple be in continuous touch with the Guru as
