Who is an Ethnographer?
An ethnographer is a person who plays multiple roles i.e. listener, therapist, information broker or/and consultant. Their main job is to study human behavior or peoples culture and use that to develop strategies. The Human Factors specialists of IDEO apply their knowledge from psychology, anthropology, biomechanics, and related fields to enhance people’s experience through design. As interdisciplinary design team members, they employ a range of observational and empathic techniques to understand the issues people face. They use this knowledge to frame design opportunities and to create scenarios and “experiential prototypes” to explore, test, and refine opportunities in context. The same ethnographic methodology can be used to understand the cultural setting of an organization and help in building proper knowledge sharing strategies to break silos and enhance effective knowledge transfer.
