Who is Abomination?
Abomination (1998) is a novel by writer Robert Swindells. It deals with themes of religious extremism, adolescence, bullying, and relationships, as well as integrating the intriguing question of what its title refers to. It is based on a young girl named Martha whose parents have strict rules based on their religion, that are completely ignored by Martha, because she has things that her parents would not allow under her bed. She’s not allowed TV, a computer, trendy clothes, “…pizza, curry, or fish and chips” and especially nobody to come over their house because of this thing in the cellar called ‘Abomination’, which is the family secret, was discovered, her parents would… The thing turns out to be her nephew, and she contacts her sister via her friend Scott, via the internet, who comes to rescue her and her son from her parents awful treatment.
