Who is a better guitarist: Hillel Slovak or John Frusciante?
My personal preference is John, but that’s just because he’s my idol who I spend hours listening to, studying, and trying to copy 😛 . I also love Hillel, and you have to take into consideration that John’s style wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for Hillel. When John first joined the peppers, he tried to emulate and cop Hillel’s playing, and the influence of Hillel’s style is a big part of John’s style today, you can still feel Hillel when John’s playing. You can argue that since Hillel left the earth at such a young age, that John is a “better” guitarist because he’s now had more time to practice and develop his skills. I have a bigger love of John, but you can’t say he’s a better guitarist because that’s unfair and unproven, because what does a “good guitarist” really mean. It means different things to different people. To me it means a lot of emotion and passion that you can feel when they play, which comes off of both John and Hillel.
