Who Invented the SCUBA Tank?
In 1939, before America’s official entry into the Second World War, Dr. Christian Lambertson — working for the Office of Strategic Services or OSS — developed a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus for the U.S. military. In 1943 Lieutenant Jack Taylor, using the Lambertson Lung, swam underwater for over a mile and submerged for 48 minutes. Although Lambertson is credited with the invention, the OSS also experimented with a second version developed by Jack Brow. Lambertson’s invention was the first official SCUBA, but a similar system was in use by Italian saboteurs two years earlier.
