Who invented the printing press and what was the significance of the invention?
The Chinese invented the printing press. Gutenberg “invented” it in the European context. (actually the invention was movable type – block printing had existed for ever.) The ability to print thousands of cheap books meant an explosion in the amount of information available and its accessibility to a wide range of people. Apart from anything else, access to Bibles was a direct cause of the Reformation.
