The first working model of a light machine-gun was manufactured at the work of the Recoil-rifle syndicate A/S (DISA) in Copenhagen and was called the Madsen. Designed and developed by Herman Madsen and quartermaster Bjarnov on the principles of Theodora Shauboe’s self-loading rifle 1896 it was the first light machine-gun to go into production. Theodora Shauboe received the patent in 1901.The Madsen was used commendable by the Russians in the Russia-Japanese war 1904-5. Later in the Great War and due Danish neutrality Madsens would be made under licence in Russia, however the Madsen arms factory in Russia would be nationalised by the communist. A small number of Madsen were also manufacture in Britain, but a court-case instigated by British infringing patterns, stopped production.
