Gas refrigerators use the evaporation of a compressed refrigerant to remove heat from surrounding air or liquid. Scottish scientist William Cullen (1710-1790) demonstrated the first artificial refrigeration at the University of Edinburgh in 1756. He froze water by using a vacuum pump to increase the evaporation rate of ethyl ether, which absorbed heat from the water.
