Sir Humphrey Davy discovered in 1811 that light is produced when passing an electric arc between two poles. By 1841, Davy`s electric arc lights had been installed in Paris. In 1879 Sir Joseph Swan of the U.K. and Thomas Alva Edison of the USA simultaneously, on opposite sides of the Atlantic, invented the incandescent light bulb.
