All language slowly evolves over time as the speakers of a language adapt it to their current communication needs. The main pressures on language are regularization (you want a simple set of rules to internalize for easy communication) and irregularization (you want the most commonly used terms to be as orthogonal and distinct as possible, so as to avoid confusion). This is why English has pretty consistent conjugation rules for verbs, but the most commonly used verbs (and the ones that refer to basic actions and state of being) have irregular tenses so that there is less possibility for confusion.
