Who invented Santa Clause?
The concept of Santa goes back a long way. The German Christian/Celts gave him the name of St. Nick, but the idea of Santa goes back before Christian times. In preChristian times the Celtic men would travel to Southern cities to purchase such things like silks and sweet meats and fruits to bring home for the families in the tribes. When he was gone the women of the families would bring symbols of life and fertility into the home, such as greenery from conifer trees and boughs of holly leaves. When the men returned from their long journeys they would surprise the women and children with the gifts, sometimes by hiding the gifts for children to find. The children believed that it was a spirit that left the gifts for them. When Christianity came to the cultures the spirits were turned into real people and saints. The winters in Gaul and Ireland were harsh and long and so the peoples celebrated the Winter Soltice, which was the longest, darkest day of winter, with promises of the coming spr
