Who invented Popcorn and how?
According to legend, Popanipacetl. He was a lowly slave who was due to be sacrificed to the sun god by the ancient Aztecs. Unfairly, he was also forced to carry the corn for the sacrfice, as well as being a sacrifice himself. In his panic, he dropped a head of corn (or maize) into the fire. Some of the corn popped straight back out again, and his tribe thought this was magic and that he would be spared by the gods if thrown into the fire. He wasn’t, unfortunately, so his glory was short-lived. Popcorn is still called popanipacetl by some people in Central America.
