Who Invented Four Wheel Drive?
Today millions of vehicles on the road are equipped with varying versions of four wheel drive. But many motorists may not be aware that this traction-enhancing technology dates back more than a century to the very beginning of the automotive age. While the early history of four wheel drive is somewhat murky, two Dutch brothers are most often credited with building the first vehicle equipped with conventional four wheel drive. Amsterdam coach-makers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker introduced an extremely advanced car in 1903 that featured a six-cylinder engine and permanent four wheel drive.
