Who invented bbq sauce?
BBQ sauce is MUCH older than the US. All of the ancient civilizations put honey or sugary syrups on pork before roasting it to give it a crisp coat. Vinegar was often added to cut the sweetness, and herbs and spices to improve the flavor. Modern American BBQ sauces ultimate derive from recipes brought over by German and Scandinavian immigrants, which were modified by using brown sugar or molasses instead of honey, and by using spices characteristic of the southwestern US, which was highly influenced by Mexican cuisine.
