Who invented a machine to help with the US Census?
Mr. Hollereth invented the punch card machine to mechanize the United States Census. It was a long stiff card with 80 columns. Each column would have a series of holes punched. A particular combination of holes represented a letter, a number, or a space. When the holes passed in front of electrical contacts, it threw counting devices. It greatly speeded up the count. His company became IBM.
