Who hoped the wild beasts of London Zoo would prove a match for Kingsmen?
Various proposals for locating the new College were floated in 1828. One such was to build on land adjacent to the new London Zoo in Regent’s Park. The idea met with strong opposition from local residents. A correspondent to The Times even warned of the effect of ‘rude and mischievous’ youths upon the sensibilities of perambulating maidservants. The editor concurred, implying that an escape of wild animals from the Zoo was unquestionably preferable to the predations of the students.
