Who has watched Eugene ONeills A Moon for the Misbegotten (with Kevin Spacey)?
MOON is one of O’Neill’s best plays, but being good and being easy are not the same thing. I think the Spacey-Best production is quite strong. Some people thought Spacey brought too much of an antic touch to the part, but I’ve seen the play a number of times and don’t think he did anything that violated O’Neill’s intentions. I’m not sure what you mean about Josie’s lines being difficult. O’Neill was not always the most natrualistic dialogue writer, but he had a sure sense of character, and if you focus on that, even the awkward-seeming lines usually land OK. It was a very strong season on Broadway, and MOON was up there for me as one of the memorable productions. You might want to check out the DVD of a revival from a few decades back starring Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst; most people look to that as the production against which all others are measured.
