Henri VanLaun translated Caractères into English in 1929. As far as I’m aware, he is the only one to have translated La Bruyère’s work. His views & writing were interesting and thought-provoking. We read Caractères in my French Lit class last year and it was one of my favorites. I read it in French, but you can probably find the VanLaun translation on Amazon or at your library. If you can read French, it’s available as a free ebook on Gutenberg.
