Who has the lead at the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament?”
Pipe Layer lays claim to Big Rock lead June 10, 2003 – MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Pipe Layer captain J. F. Pedersen demonstrated a flare for the dramatic Tuesday, when he motored into port around 10 p.m. with a 677-pound blue marlin that easily took the lead in the 45th annual Big Rock. The Second Chance, owned by Henry Keen of Charlotte N.C., had been atop the leader board with the 603.5-pounder until the Pipe Layer reached the scales. When Second Chance slipped to second, it marked the fifth time in eight hours that a different boat had been atop the Big Rock leader board. The Charleston, S.C.-based crew let out a mighty yell when weighmaster George Lott shouted “677-pounds” to the crowd that was still gathered at the weigh station. Nearly 2,000 watched the early weigh-ins captured live by local sports broadcasts. Only the “diehards” got to see the big fish. “That fish went down on us … but we finally got it up,’’ said Pedersen, who was at the controls of his boat for six straight hours

A year ago the winner was landed on the first day – a 640-pounder caught by Darryl Reyna on the boat Artemis out of Charleston, S.C.
