Ken Follett, or Harry Patterson, is mainly known for writing spy stories like “The Key To Rebbecca” and “The Eye of the Needle,” but he has taken time to write a couple of really good historical fiction pieces. I found “Pillars of Earth” to work on several levels. It is a darn good mystery based on the infamous “White Ship” which sank in 1120 killing numerous royals and muddying the succession of the kings of France and England. This led, eventually, to the Hundred Years’ Wars. It’s also a romance about a poor, but hard-working builder, and the first glimmer of the middle class at the end of the Dark Ages.
